Common Ground 22
Common Ground 22 is built around a simple, yet powerful idea: to bring our nation’s heroes together in a supportive environment where connection, conversation, and community come naturally through fishing, marine educational clinics, and the great outdoors.
Through shared outdoor experiences and meaningful engagement, this program helps our nation’s heroes reconnect with others who understand their journey while enjoying the peace of the outdoors. By creating spaces where they can relax, talk, and build lasting friendships, Common Ground 22 strengthens the sense of belonging and camaraderie that many miss after leaving military service.
What is Common Ground 22?
Common Ground 22 Connect is dedicated to honoring our nation’s heroes by harnessing the healing power of nature and fishing. Our goal is to build a robust, compassionate community that uplifts and empowers veterans, active-duty personnel, first responders, and their families by providing the support they need to thrive. Through our focused efforts, we strive to make a meaningful, enduring impact on the lives of those who have selflessly served our country. Together, we will forge a brighter future for those who have served, ensuring they receive the recognition, resources, and life-enriching opportunities they deserve.
Program Overview
Common Ground 22 Connect offers a vital, purpose-driven initiative dedicated to supporting the mental health and well-being of all who have served—veterans, active-duty service members, first responders, and their families. Through our program, participants can enjoy a diverse slate of outdoor activities, including fishing charters, shore fishing clinics, electric bike canal fishing excursions (MA chapter only, hosted from our Buzzards Bay community center), rod-building clinics, and various other ocean-based sports. These experiences create a calm environment where individuals can find relaxation, camaraderie, and emotional renewal.
Surrounded by like-minded peers who share similar experiences, participants can experience the therapeutic benefits of recreational fishing and other outdoor marine activities while building a broader support network. While fishing alone cannot solve every challenge, it plays a crucial role and serves as a gateway to our other transitional programs, which advance suicide-prevention efforts through therapeutic recreation and meaningful social connections.
We strive to create a space where all heroes can find solace and connect to build a safer network. We recognize the immense sacrifices made in serving our nation with honor and bravery, and we are honored to provide an outlet that contributes to their well-being. At Common Ground 22 Connect, the mental well-being of our participants remains our top priority. We have witnessed firsthand how time in nature and outdoor activities can positively impact mental health.
By stepping away from daily stressors and immersing in the tranquility of the natural environment, participants can reap a range of benefits, including:
Fishing in serene surroundings can help alleviate stress, promote relaxation, and provide a much-needed break from daily pressures.

Engaging in fishing requires focus and concentration, which can enhance mindfulness and strengthen the connection between your mind and body.
Being in nature and participating in an enjoyable activity like fishing can boost your mood, increase feelings of happiness, and provide a sense of accomplishment.
Our fishing trips foster a supportive and inclusive community, allowing you to connect with fellow veterans who share similar experiences. Building relationships and engaging in conversations can contribute to a sense of belonging and support.

The tranquil setting of fishing trips offers an opportunity for self-reflection, introspection, and personal growth. It can provide a space for you to gain insights, set goals, and find inner peace.
Why Community Matters
For many of our nation’s heroes, the transition from military life or civil service can bring unexpected challenges. The structure, camaraderie, and shared purpose that once defined everyday life can suddenly feel distant. Common Ground 22 Connect is designed to help rebuild those connections by bringing our heroes together in environments where they can relax, share experiences, and support one another. Sometimes the most powerful support comes from simply being surrounded by people who understand. Through these shared experiences, veterans find encouragement, friendship, and a renewed sense of belonging that strengthens both individuals and the entire community.
