Why Fishing for the
Mission 22 Exists

Fishing for the Mission 22 is not just an organization; it is a movement dedicated to supporting our nation’s heroes and combating the tragic epidemic of veteran suicides. Since the onset of the Global War on Terror in 2001, over 7,000 brave military personnel have been lost to combat. More shocking is the fact that during the same period, the number of veterans who have taken their own lives has surpassed 120,000. This alarming statistic underscores the urgency of our mission.

In our nation, only one percent of our citizens joins the armed forces, and we are dedicated to the one percent who have selflessly served us all. Our purpose extends beyond raising awareness about the heartbreaking reality of veteran suicides. We strive to create a sanctuary of healing and connection for our heroes through the tranquility of fishing. This peaceful activity not only offers stress relief but also fosters a sense of community among our heroes, providing them with a supportive network of peers who understand their experiences.

Our support does not stop at the water’s edge. Recognizing the importance of reintegration into civilian life, Fishing for the Mission 22 uses fishing as a pathway to access our various programs offered through our community center in Buzzards Bay and the other regions we serve. These include vocational retraining opportunities in the marine industry, hardship grants, peer support services, behavioral care, rod-building clinics, VA claim assistance, and much more. By offering practical pathways to our other transitional programs, we aim to empower our nation’s heroes by giving them the tools they need to transition smoothly back into a healthy life and workforce. This initiative provides veterans with a renewed sense of purpose and contributes to their financial stability and independence.

We stand as a beacon of hope and support, reminding our veterans, active-duty personnel, first responders, and their family members of the respect and gratitude they deserve. Fishing for the Mission 22 is more than a nonprofit organization; it is a pledge of solidarity, a commitment to care, and a testament to the resilience of our heroes across the communities we serve. Join us as we cast our lines and reel in hope. Together, we can turn the tide and help our nation’s heroes navigate the path to recovery and reintegration.

Why the Number 22 Matters

The number 22 represents a sobering reality that has deeply impacted the veteran community. It serves as a reminder of the number of veterans who were once estimated to die by suicide each day. While the statistics have evolved over time, the message behind the number remains the same, too many veterans continue to struggle in silence.

Fishing for the Mission 22 exists to bring awareness to this issue while creating real opportunities for connection, support, and healing. Every fishing trip, every event, and every conversation helps build a stronger community where veterans feel seen, valued, and supported.

Our Nation's Veterans

FFTM22 acknowledges the significant presence of veterans in the United States. As of October 2021, the country was home to 18.0 million veterans, with 8.4 million actively contributing to the civilian labor force. Within this population, an estimated 4.9 million veterans, equivalent to 27 percent, bear service-connected disabilities in the post-9/11 era. We recognize the unique challenges and sacrifices faced by these individuals, and we are dedicated to providing support and assistance to improve their well-being and quality of life.

Veteran Suicide, A Public Health Crisis

Veteran suicide is a pressing crisis. Since September 11, 2001, over 125,000 veterans have tragically lost their lives to suicide, outnumbering the combined combat casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan. Homelessness, drug addiction, and mental illness disproportionately affect veterans after their separation from service. Combat injuries and financial insecurity further compound the challenges our veterans face. These issues, coupled with the wounds of war, demand urgent attention as they continue to claim the lives of our veterans at alarming rates every day. Together, we can make a difference.

Suicide Rate

We are passionately dedicated to combating the heartbreaking issue of veteran suicide. The statistics paint a grim reality: an estimated average of 22 veterans per day tragically lose their lives to suicide in our county. Shockingly, veterans are at a 50% higher risk of suicide compared to their non-serving peers. Disturbingly, projections indicate that by 2030, veteran suicides may outnumber post-9/11 combat deaths by a staggering 23-fold. The urgency of this situation cannot be understated. Together, we must take action to address and prevent veteran suicides without delay. Join us in our mission to save lives and provide support to our brave veterans in their time of need.

We are committed to helping
our nation’s heroes heal.

Operation Tackle 22 and Common Ground 22 Network

Fishing for the Mission 22 is dedicated to creating opportunities for our heroes to reconnect, find support, and experience the healing power of community. We build meaningful programs that bring our heroes together in a positive, welcoming environment. Many face challenges after service, including isolation, stress, PTSD, TBI (traumatic brain injuries), and the loss of the strong bonds formed during military life. By providing outdoor experiences, community engagement, and mental health and transitional program opportunities to connect with others who understand their journey, we help foster renewed purpose and camaraderie. Our goal is to create moments where veterans can relax, share stories, and rebuild their lives, while remembering that they are part of a community that cares deeply about their well-being and service. Every event, partnership, connection, and act of kindness through our compassionate programs helps move this mission forward.
